Tutoring

The Tutoring Process

Tutoring is free to all students enrolled at New York City College of Technology.

One-on-one and small group tutoring are conducted during the times that tutors are scheduled to be present in the Learning Center.

The tutors are selected from a pool of upper-level students, graduates, and professionals who have completed the coursework with at least a B+ average and have expertise in the subject matter.

Proof of Tutoring

Students requiring proof they came to tutoring may obtain a verification slip signed by the tutor and a full-time staff member. This slip verifies the date and time of the session, identifies the student's preparedness, and provides recommendations and comments. It may be given to a faculty member, adviser, or staff member who requests it.

Important Rules

The following are prohibited in the Learning Center:

  1. Food or drink.
  2. Cell phone usage.
  3. Children. College policy prohibits children in the workplace and classrooms; therefore, they are not permitted in the Learning Center.
  4. Computer use that is not legal and in accordance with the Acceptable Use of Computer Resources Policy and Open Access Technology Facilities Policies.

Pets: Only service animals are allowed on campus, including in the Learning Center.

Learning Center's Tutor Schedules

The learning center's schedules change from semester to semester; therefore, students should periodically check the bulletin boards. The current schedules are posted outside the entrance to Rooms LG - 18 and LG - 25.

Courses Tutored

Tutoring is offered in select biological science courses and in select mathematics courses. For more information, consult the flyers on the bulletin boards in the center or send an email to AtriumLearningCenter@citytech.cuny.edu.

Carry Your City Tech ID Card

Students who participate in tutoring need to have their names and EMPLIDs available in order to sign in for their tutoring sessions. They should bring their college ID with them.

What Students Should Know and Be Prepared For

  1. Students should regularly attend and participate in their in-person, on line, or hybrid classes. The purpose of tutoring is to supplement their class experience, not to replace it.
  2. They should bring all the necessary materials with them to the tutoring session. This includes syllabi, textbooks, notes, examinations they have taken, and other supplies and tools they will need for their work.
  3. Students should make time to read their assignments and prepare as much work as they are able before the tutoring session. This will enable them to know what areas they are having difficulty with, so they can receive the appropriate help during their tutoring sessions.
  4. Students must do the work themselves. The tutor will teach them the necessary skills to successfully complete their work.
  5. The tutor may not help students with take home examinations. Students must do this work on their own.
  6. It is recommended that students seek out tutoring at the begin of the semester and attend regularly. They should not wait until the last minute to seek assistance.
  7. Students should actively participate with their tutor during every session. They should let their tutor know if they do not understand something. It is possible it may need to be explained again or they may require assistance in a different way.
  8. If for any reason students have a problem with their tutor or the tutoring schedule, they should contact Judith Rockway via email at Judith.Rockway84@citytech.cuny.edu.
  9. If students have a comment or complaint about the service they received, they should complete and submit the student feedback form and submit it to the director.

Students also have various academic resources available to support their in-class learning. They include faculty office hours, peer team led learning sessions, workshops, and subject tutoring. Please consult the City Tech website for more information.
