TAP Appeals Process

Satisfactory Academic Progress for NYS Financial Aid Programs

Undergraduate students must make satisfactory academic progress toward completing their degree to remain eligible for NYS financial aid at City Tech.

  • Attain a minimum GPA as specified in the chart below for each payment requested.
  • You are allowed a total of 48 TAP points for your entire undergraduate degree. You use 6 points for every full-time TAP payment. You may receive up to 6 full-time payments as an associate degree student. For some special programs, you can receive up to 10 full-time payments, a total of 60 points.
  • For a full-time award, you must be enrolled in at least 12 credits or equated credits that meet the requirements of your curriculum/major.
  • Part-time students who start college after the 2006-2007 academic year are eligible for TAP and must register for at least 6 required credits and have a 2.0 GPA
  • If you repeat a course that you previously passed, you may not count the repeated course towards enrollment for TAP purposes. If you repeat a course that you previously failed, you may include that course towards enrollment for TAP purposes.
  • Remedial courses may be counted toward either full-time or part-time enrollment for TAP purposes. However, after your first payment, you must register for at least 6 non-remedial credits.
  • To receive TAP payments, you must make academic progress towards a degree. The minimum academic requirements are indicated in the charts below.

The TAP Wavier and Appeals Process

Students can receive a one-time waiver of the good academic standing requirement specified in TAP regulations as of 1981 and amended in 1996. However, the waiver is not automatic. It may only be granted in extraordinary or unusual circumstances that are beyond the student's control, and with reasonable expectation that the student will meet future requirements. If a one-time waiver is granted, it becomes part of the student's NYS financial aid record.

To request a one-time waiver, students must:

  • Speak to a TAP Counselor in the Financial Aid Office
  • Complete and submit a completed TAP waiver/appeal form to Tapinfo@citytech.cuny.edu
