First Semester Transfer Students
If you received communication regarding a non-contributory course, it is suggested that you review your current registration with a first semester transfer advisor in the STAR office.
Advisors are available in-person on Mondays and Wednesdays in room NG-08.
If you need an alternative method of assistance, you may contact the office at 718-260-5508 or transferadvisement@citytech.cuny.edu to coordinate with a representative.
Our compilation of Frequently Asked Questions may provide clarify before you meet with an advisor.
Communication is sent to students who have one or more courses deemed non-contributory. A course is deemed non-contributory if:
- It does not fulfill a degree requirement for your current major
- The course is being repeated after earning a passing grade or receiving credit
- The course is scheduled during an intersession
- Courses taken during the Winter session are not eligible for NYS aid, even if the course is required for your current major
- The course is applicable to an academic minor and is plotting under Elective Credits Not Allowed.
- Any minor course that plots under Elective Courses Not Allowed will still count towards your academic minor, but will not be deemed contributory for financial aid/TAP purposes. Students may be advised to take minor courses in addition to 12 contributory credits.
Non-contributory courses will not count towards your academic eligibility for full-time or part-time status. For more information on DegreeWorks, please review our DGW FAQs.
If after reviewing Degree Works, you believe that your course(s) are TAP eligible, you may send an email to the TAP Coordinator at TAPinfo@CityTech.Cuny.Edu to confirm your eligibility.
Students who have earned less than 30 credits and are registered in intended majors such as UCH (Undeclared health) may be eligible for a TAP payment, assuming that they meet all other TAP requirements and the courses are not repeated with a previous grade of D or better.
Student with prior degrees may be eligible for TAP, as long as all other TAP criteria are met. However, students with a prior College degree are not eligible for the NYS Excelsior scholarship.
TAP is automatically packaged for all students who meet the TAP requirements at the packaging time and will be removed as soon as the TAP Certify Officer becomes aware that the requirements are not being met. Late credit transfer can lead to the return of funding to NYS HESC at anytime the student is deemed ineligible.
TAP may be reduced or cancelled if the student's courses are not required or the student does not have an additional 3 contributory/required credits.
Your full-time TAP award amount is displayed on your NYS HESC TAP application and can be viewed via your secure access. If you are academically eligible, all or a portion of the award will be displayed on your CUNYfirst account depending on your registration.
Your schedule must be TAP compliant before the semester add/drop period ends and the said term academic calendar deadlines must be observed.
TAP is a semester-based program. For TAP eligibility, students must register for at least 3 credits that are required for their major for each term.
Credits earned refers to total credits that are successfully completed to date, that is, overall semesters in attendance plus transferred credits.
