Academic Advising

Non-Contributory Courses

A course is deemed non-contributory if:

  • It does not fulfill a degree requirement for your current major
  • The course is being repeated after earning a passing grade or receiving credit
  • The course is scheduled during an intersession
    • Courses taken during the Winter session are not eligible for NYS aid, even if the course is required for your current major
  • The course is applicable to an academic minor and is plotting under Elective Credits Not Allowed.
    • Any minor course that plots under Elective Courses Not Allowed will still count towards your academic minor, but will not be deemed contributory for financial aid/TAP purposes. Students may be advised to take minor courses in addition to 12 contributory credits.

Non-contributory courses will not count towards your academic eligibility for full-time or part-time status. For more information on DegreeWorks, please review our DGW FAQs.

If after reviewing Degree Works, you believe that your course(s) are TAP eligible, you may send an email to the TAP Coordinator at TAPinfo@CityTech.Cuny.Edu to confirm your eligibility.

  • Have a U.S. HS Diploma or Equivalent (GED, TASC) or passed a federally approved ATB exam
  • Attend an approved college
  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate degree-granting program of study and maintain good academic standing
  • Transfer students who are transferring with at least 60 credits must declare a major in their first semester before the published deadline. Consult the academic calendar for the deadline.
  • Be a first time college student as of Fall 2006 or thereafter and enrolled for at least 6 credits but fewer than 12 credits applicable to your program of study to be eligible for part-time TAP.
  • Be enrolled in at least 12 credits applicable to your program of study to be eligible for full-time TAP.
  • Be charged at least $200 in tuition per year.

Meet with your Academic Advisor, check Degree Works prior to your course registration, and be sure to select at least 12 credits that satisfy unmet requirements.

Approximately 48-72 hours after you have registered for your courses, check your Degree Works account to ensure that none of your courses fall in the Elective Courses Not Allowed section of your DegreeWorks audit.
