The Companion for the First Year at City Tech

For a college student, success means making the most of City Tech’s opportunities, from enrollment all the way to graduation. The Companion is designed to help students navigate a new path, understand the rules of the university system, and find their own place in City Tech’s vibrant college community.
The Companion is a guide to help students navigate their first year at City Tech. Its chapters bring readers step-by-step through everything needed to not only survive, but thrive in college. It contains information about the City Tech campus, tips from successful students and peer mentors, and exercises and activities that help students plan budgets, manage time, and maximize learning.
The chapters in The Companion are organized to help students in their first year. Chapter 1 provides information that is useful at any time but ideal to read before the first semester starts. From registering for classes to finding their way around campus, from understanding the college grading system to figuring out how to pay for college, this chapter helps students hit the ground running. Chapter 2 offers practical advice about setting up a productive college routine, beginning with the very first week of classes. Chapter 3 takes a deeper dive into effective learning strategies. Chapter 4 explores college life beyond the classroom, encouraging students to take advantage of opportunities on campus. Finally, Chapter 5 offers a roadmap to the second half of the semester, discussing what to expect from midterms to registration for next semester’s classes to final exams.
The Companion is also a useful tool for educators who work closely with students who are beginning their college journey.
