GENERAL INFORMATION

Frequently asked general questions

  • Our department offers two teaching certificate programs. The Career and Technical Education (CTE) program will allow you to teach a trade subject in a CTE high school or middle school, such as Computer Technology, Carpentry, Aviation, Culinary Arts, and Electrical Installation. The Technology Education program is K-12, and you will teach computer, technology, engineering, and related topics in elementary, middle, or high schools.

  • To take classes as a Non-Degree Student, visit City Tech - Non-Degree Applications
    • Complete the Student Information section
    • Enter the desired course numbers (eg; EDU 4580, EDU 4590); if the form requires you to enter three courses, just enter a repeat course in the third box.
    • Complete the Educational History section
    • Click on Submit application!
    • Expect to receive an automatic email with instructions on how to set up an account and register for classes.
  • Please Note: Processing will take up to 48 business hours.

  • It depends on your terminal degree and work experience. You can find the specific requirements from the NYS Certificate Database; however, in general, if you have sufficient work experience in a CTE subject, you can obtain a Transitional A certificate by enrolling in our CTE program. Then, you can obtain an initial teaching certificate by completing three courses (9 credits) below.

  • Technology Education is a general subject, so you must have a bachelor's degree. If you have a bachelor's degree in a non-STEM major, you must complete about 60 pedagogy and content course credits. If you have a bachelor's degree in STEM, like technology or engineering, you can apply for the Transitional C certificate program.
