Frequently Asked Questions

You are a transfer student if you have previously attended any college, university, and/or proprietary school since graduating from high school or secondary school.

This applies whether or not you are seeking transfer credit and/or changing your program of study.

If you would like to enroll in a class at City Tech but not apply to a degree program, you may take courses as a non-degree student. Information regarding How to Apply can be found on our Admissions page.

Step 1: Apply online

Step 2: Application is approved

Step 2(a): Application is denied

Step 3: Student receives an acceptance letter from City Tech to attend the upcoming semester

Step 3(a): After an application is denied the student must file an appeal

Step 4: Student will submit additional documentation if applicable

Step 5: Student attends advisement to learn what classes are needed for the semester

Step 6: Student registers for classes

Step 7: Student attends classes at the start of the semester

There are generally a few extra steps in your admission process if you're an International Student. However, the first step is to Apply Online and submit the supporting documents to the University Application Processing Center or the CUNY Welcome Center. Once the documents are processed, a DSO will contact you to begin preparation of the I-20. More information can be found on our International Student Services page.

International students, educated in countries where English is not the official language, must submit official post-secondary transcripts and diplomas in both their native language and the English language translation. Transcripts can be evaluated by the University Application Processing Center (UAPC) or by one of the evaluation services listed below:

Only students with conferred Bachelor's degrees recognized by CUNY are exempt from this requirement. Students with foreign high school documentation must submit their documents to the University Application Processing Center or the CUNY Welcome Center. As per CUNY's admission policy, Individualized Education Program (IEP) diplomas are not recognized as proof of high school graduation.

Your application may be delayed if it's missing supporting documents or if you have a Negative Service Indicator on your CUNYfirst account.

Your acceptance letter will be emailed to you. Soon thereafter, you will receive a communication informing you that your transfer credit evaluation has been completed and you are now eligible to register for classes

Yes, your acceptance is valid for one academic year. However, you may need to pay the application processing fee again to re-activate your application.

Your CUNY application is valid for one academic year. If you did not attend another college during the semester you were originally accepted for, you may be eligible to re-activate your application. However, if you attended another college after being accepted to City Tech or it has been longer than one academic year since your acceptance, you must re-apply.

You may contact the Office of Student Affairs to appeal the admission decision. Transcripts (printed within six months of your application submission) for all past post-secondary institutions attended and a statement explaining your situation is required.

Transcripts must be on school letterhead, in its sealed original envelope, and printed within 6 months of the date of submission to be considered official. Transcripts for schools outside of the United States and its territories, must be submitted with all supporting documentation to the University Application Processing Center or the CUNY Welcome Center. Official electronic transcripts must be submitted by email directly to admissions@citytech.cuny.edu

You can be admitted without proof of immunization, but you will not be able to register for more than 5 credits without proof of immunity to measles mumps and rubella. For more information, please go to Immunization Requirements

Your GPA is used to determine eligibility for admission to the college and/or program applied to, but does not transfer into the college with you. Once you are accepted, your City Tech GPA is determined by the course grades received as a City tech student.

If you have a cumulative GPA below the required minimum 2.0, then you may submit a written appeal for reinstatement of application to the Office of Vice President of Enrollment and Student Affairs. Appeals can be sent by email to ESAR@citytech.cuny.edu.

When you initially claimed your CUNYfirst account you received a username and an EMPL/CUNY ID number. Your ID number remains the same throughout your academic career at CUNY.
