Investigation of Violent Felonies

In accordance with the New York State Education Law, City Tech maintains a plan for the investigation of violent felonies, which includes coordination with appropriate law enforcement agencies. In addition, in compliance with New York State Law and subject to applicable federal law, including, but not limited to, the federal Campus Sexual Assault Victims’ Bill of Rights under Title 20 U.S. Code 1092(f) which gives the victim of a sexual offense the right to decide whether or not to report, the College will notify the NYPD within 24 hours of receiving a report of a violent felony.

The Department of Public Safety will take the following steps after a report of a violent felony offense:

  • Responding Public Safety officers will determine if the circumstances require immediate intervention in order to prevent further injury to victims or to insure the apprehension of offenders.
  • If the offender(s) are no longer on campus and the immediate threat has ended, officers will take the appropriate measures to provide support to victims and implement established protocols for criminal investigations.
  • If it is determined that the elements of the offense are consistent with any violent felony crime as defined under New York State law, the Department of Public Safety will contact the NYPD in order to transfer responsibility for the investigation.
  • The Department of Public Safety will assist the NYPD in any manner requested until the completion of the investigation.
