More Than Two Dozen Chefs and Restaurateurs Wow Guests at 'Chefs Celebrate City Tech' Scholarship Fundraiser

More than 200 alumni, students, faculty and good friends of the College attended the Department of Hospitality Management-hosted “Chefs Celebrate City Tech” on October 4, 2011, a festive event that featured more than two dozen chefs who wowed diners with their delectable signature dishes and desserts. The department, working in collaboration with the City Tech Foundation and Office of Development, raised nearly $40,000 toward much-needed student scholarships.

The evening began with live jazz, courtesy of Sophisticated Sounds featuring Ron Carlton, as guests were greeted by hospitality management students offering Brooklyn Brewery’s Local 2 beer, Pasternak Cabernet Sauvignon and ginger cocktails served in a sculptured glass made of ice, courtesy of Icydrink. Guests bid on auction items that included dinner for six at the Four Seasons Restaurant and Porter House New York, a Disney vacation, Manhattan weekend hotel accommodations and Broadway theatre tickets.

Other highlights of the evening included grand tours of the department’s newly renovated main teaching kitchen, where guests sampled more tasty treats like shrimp with risotto from Union Square Café, house made duck confit sausage from Lighthouse/Pier 60 and crab crusted halibut from Mortons, to name only a few.

President Russell Hotzler read a proclamation from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg designating October 4th “City Tech Hospitality Day” and a letter from President Barack Obama congratulating the College and its Department of Hospitality Management on their continued success in providing quality education to students.

Chef Michael Lomonaco ‘84 of Porter House New York presented City Tech graduate and Foundation board member Martin Jaffe ’65 with a chef’s jacket commemorating the event. And who could forget the affable Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz reminding guests of how great Brooklyn is and how many of City Tech’s amazing graduate culinary and pastry artists have helped to make the borough an even more popular place to dine.
