City Tech to Honor ‘Champions of the Environment’ at 2015 Best of New York Award Dinner on May 18

New York City College of Technology will honor “Champions of the Environment” at the 2015 Best of New York Award Dinner on Monday, May 18 at the New York Hilton Midtown, Avenue of the Americas at 53rd Street. The evening will begin with a Guest of Honor Reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the award presentations at 7:00 p.m. City Tech graduate Michael Lomonaco '84, celebrity chef and managing partner of Porter House New York at Time Warner Center, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

Honorees are Liberty Mutual Insurance, Motivate (Citibike), SL Green Realty Corp, Waste Management and City Tech's Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Team DURA, all of which play a significant role in the environmental, economic and educational life of the local, national and global communities.

The College is especially proud of Team DURA, which is dedicated to educating and informing the community about sustainable energy, renewable resources and new approaches to greening urban residential spaces. Team DURA is the only team from New York and the only team composed of all undergraduate students.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon challenges collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.

First held in 1982, the Best of New York Award Dinner is hosted by the City Tech Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1981 to raise funds for the College. Proceeds from the annual dinner help fund Foundation-sponsored scholarships and other student financial assistance and professional development programs.
