What is the difference between reporting to BIT and Public Safety?

BIT

The Behavioral Intervention Team's role is to review student behavior on campus that appears bizarre or destructive and intervene for safety and support. Often times the behavior of the student being reviewed is not disruptive enough to require disciplinary action, and the student may refuse counseling services. Becoming more aware of the student and offering support services could prevent future escalation and crisis for the student. Contacting BIT will not guarantee that a student will be removed from a class. Examples of student behavior that should be reported to BIT include, but are not limited to:

  • Talking to themselves
  • Unable to answer simple questions
  • Extremely argumentative
  • Hostile or overly sensitive
  • Pacing back and forth
  • Frantic

Public Safety

Public Safety provides the front line of safety for the College community. If you are subjected to unwelcome attention, threats, or continued classroom disruption, or if you encounter a situation with the potential of becoming violent, contact Public Safety immediately. Student Affairs works in collaboration with Public Safety to address student conduct issues or address a student's inappropriate behaviors. These are behaviors that cause a disruption to the course after the professor's intervention has failed. Reporting a student to Public Safety will likely result in the immediate removal of the student from the classroom. However, it will not guarantee that the student will not return to the next class session. Examples of student behaviors (physical or verbal) that should be reported directly and immediately to Public Safety include, but are not limited to:

  • Disorderly conduct
  • Fighting and threatening harm
  • Disruptive classroom conduct
  • Indecent or obscene conduct or expressions
  • Inappropriate, intimate conduct
