Transfer Students

Transfer Evaluation Criteria

Department of Architectural Technology — BTech Program, NYCCT

The following criteria are used to evaluate transfer applications and determine course equivalency for courses within the BTech program in the Department of Architectural Technology. These criteria supplement City Tech’s college-wide transfer credit policies.

  • Official Transcript: Applicant must submit an official transcript from all previously attended post-secondary institutions.
  • Supporting Documentation: Syllabi, course descriptions, and a portfolio are REQUIRED to aid in the evaluation for design studio and technical courses.
    • Portfolios should reflect the range and level of coursework completed, including both design studios and relevant technical or support courses (e.g., structures, environmental systems, materials, or construction documentation).
      • Include examples of both analog and digital representation methods, such as hand drawings, physical models, digital modeling, rendering, and documentation.
      • Clearly indicate your role for any work done in teams or in collaboration with others.
      • Clearly indicate what software was used to develop the drawings and projects.
    • Requirements:
      • File format: Single 8.5"x11" PDF file (portrait or landscape orientation), Maximum 30 pages, Maximum 30 MB in size. All pages must be numbered.
      • File name: CUNY ID_Portfolio_Transfer Application_Application Year
      • Cover format: CUNY ID and Table of Contents
  • Minimum Grade: Only courses completed with a grade of C or higher (or as dictated by City Tech policy) are eligible for transfer evaluation.
  • Deadline to Submit: All required documentation must be submitted at least one month prior to the start of registration for the semester to which the student is applying.

Coursework will be considered equivalent to NYCCT courses if it meets all of the following conditions:

  • Content Alignment: Demonstrates comparable subject matter, scope, and learning outcomes.
  • Credit Hours: Matches or exceeds the credit value of the NYCCT course. Courses with fewer credits will not be accepted unless multiple courses can be combined to meet the credit requirement.
  • Level of Instruction: Reflects the appropriate depth of technical and design instruction for the stage of study (introductory vs. advanced).
  • Technical Integration: Includes evidence of integrated instruction in software, digital tools, or fabrication methods where relevant.
  • Upper Limit: Transfer credit is accepted for design studios up to Design IV (ARCH 2410 or equivalent) only.
  • Beyond Design IV: Courses completed at other institutions may be applied as architectural electives or general electives, but not for advanced studio placement.
  • Purpose: This ensures students acquire the methodologies, representational skills, and critical thinking embedded in the NYCCT design sequence.

Applicants must demonstrate readiness in the following areas, either through prior coursework or evidence in a portfolio:

  • AutoCAD
  • Revit
  • Rhino
  • Adobe Creative Suite
  • 3D rendering and digital fabrication tools

Placement Adjustment: Students lacking proficiency may be placed in earlier courses, regardless of previously earned credits, to ensure technical competency.

  • Digital Record: All transfer evaluations are documented in a departmental evaluation log and shared with the City Tech Transfer Office.
  • Notification:
    • Students will be notified in writing (via email) of missing documentation or portfolio requirements.
    • Once all required documentation is received, and the evaluations have been completed by the college and department, students will be able to view all credit decisions in DegreeWorks.
  • Advisement: Students receive guidance on appropriate course registration and degree planning.

Per City Tech policy, students must complete a minimum number of credits in residence to be eligible for graduation:

  • Associate Degree: At least 34 credits, including 17 credits within the major.
  • Bachelor’s Degree: Minimum residency credits as outlined in the City Tech catalog.
This requirement applies in addition to departmental transfer evaluation decisions.
