The ESOL program provides specialized courses in reading, writing, and grammar for non-native English speakers. Placement into ESOL courses is determined through the CUNY Assessment Test (Accuplacer) and a personal interview during initial advisement.

Students who meet the CUNY Assessment Test criteria but still wish to strengthen their English skills may also request to enroll in ESOL courses. The program offers two non-credit levels - ESOL 011W and ESOL 021W - designed to prepare students for general academic coursework.

A minimum score of 60 on the CUNY Assessment Test is required for admission to the ESOL program. Students scoring below 60 will be referred to the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP), where they can develop English proficiency full-time before enrolling in college courses.

Students are placed into ESOL 011W or ESOL 021W based on their placement test results and advance to ENG 1101ML (English Composition I for Multilingual Students) after successfully completing each level.

Students who meet the placement criteria may enter ENG 1101ML directly without taking ESOL courses. ENG 1101ML is equivalent to ENG 1101: English Composition I, but includes two additional instructional hours focused on language support for ESL learners. Prerequisites: PI 51—64; ESL Placement Tests; a grade of "S" in ESOL 021W (without proficiency); or approval from the ESOL Coordinator.
