Chemistry

Facilities and Instrumentation

One of the strengths of the chemistry department is our broad range of modern instrumentation. In fact, the chemistry department at the NYC College of Technology is one of the best equipped undergraduate chemistry programs in New York. Through coursework and faculty-guided research projects, students gain experience with much of the same equipment used today in industrial research labs.

Our chromatographic techniques include:

  • Gas chromatography (GC)
  • Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
  • Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)
  • High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)

Our spectroscopic techniques include:

  • Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR and ATR-FTIR)
  • Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS)
  • Fluorescence spectrophotometry
  • Atomic absorption spectroscopy
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR)
  • Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX)

Our polymer analysis techniques include:

  • Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA)
  • Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)

In addition to the techniques listed above, we have specialized equipment for:

  • Sub-micron laser diffraction particle size analysis
  • X-ray diffraction (XRD)
  • Voltammetry
  • Atomic force microscopy (AFM)
