City Tech Dental Hygiene Professor Presented with Industry Mentoring Award

February 19, 2016

RDH Magazine (Registered Dental Hygienist)—a professional magazine—and Philips Sonicare recently presented Professor Marilyn Cortell, RDH, MS, FAADH, an associate professor in the Dental Hygiene Department at City Tech, with the Mentor of Distinction Award at the Center for Life Long Learning, American Dental Hygienists’ Association, Annual Session in Nashville, Tennessee on June 19, 2015.

Cortell has been at City Tech since 2000 and lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of oral health topics. She was nominated for the award based on mentoring experiences with Mary Kellerman, RDH, of Billerica, Massachusetts. Cortell is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Dental Hygiene and a Consultant Member of The Commission on Dental Competency Assessment (formerly known as the NERB).

“I am honored to be the recipient of the national Philips Sonicare and RDH Magazine Mentor of Distinction Award. It reaffirms my gratitude for the wisdom and support I have received throughout my career and personal life that granted me, in turn, the privilege of sharing it with others. I am most humbled and appreciative for this recognition,” said Cortell. “True mentoring process takes time and a sound commitment. To that end, should you be the recipient or the provider, give it your all, as the outcome is a big win-win.”

Kellerman, one of several who nominated Cortell and former president of the state association, believes Cortell was very influential in advocating membership in Massachusetts as well as the Dental Hygienists’ Association of the State of New York.

“Marilyn has been an active member of her profession since 1977. I first met her as a leader in our Middlesex component where she also served as our Massachusetts Dental Hygienists’ Association president in 1989,” said Kellerman. “She is loved and cherished by many dental hygiene students she has nurtured now for over a decade. It was the time she took and the words she chose to use that made the most impact.”
