Student Support's mission is to provide students with disabilities -- physical/hidden/learning, affective mood disorders and temporary conditions -- with the tools, services and accommodations necessary for achievement. All initiatives focus on academic success for retention, graduation and transition to professional employment.
Student Support addresses the needs of the "whole person," moving students towards fulfillment in a continuous and comprehensive experience.
Students in need of Student Support services can contact the office on their own or be referred by professors or by others. They then are asked to submit documentation to the program's intake counselor. Those without documentation are referred for testing. Documentation supports participation in Student Support and/or eligibility to receive reasonable accommodations. For example, students with learning differences may be entitled to extended testing time or quiet testing environments. Students with visual disabilities or hand-dysfunctions can receive note-taking services in classrooms.
Student Support's services include counseling, career exploration, workshops, tutorials, sign language interpreter services, testing arrangements, access to the program's computer lab with adaptive software, and priority academic/financial aid advisement and registration. Program counselors remain the primary contact. Other team players in Student Support include the director, assistant director, coordinator of sign language interpreters, technology coordinator, testing coordinator, academic/financial aid advisors, special projects coordinator, tutors, note-takers and scribes.
Eligible students can apply at any time by scheduling an appointment with the program's intake counselor. It is advisable to contact us early in the semester to discuss academic plans and accommodations. For additional information about Student Support, please refer to the College Catalogue (page 54) or the Student Handbook (page36).
