Student Support Services

Student Support offers counseling, career counseling, workshops, tutorials, sign-language interpreter services and special testing accommodations. The program adds to the traditional cluster upon identifying new needs and academic trends. The office also provides priority academic/financial aid advisement. Services are available throughout the year:

Counseling Services:

Each program student is assigned a counselor who provides academic and personal counseling. Counselors identify issues that interfere with academic performance, collaborate with faculty and make referrals. They remain the students' primary contact. Counselors provide workshops to develop critical thinking and other academic skills.

Career Counseling/Industry Linkage:

SSSP provides opportunities to "self-discover" and explore career-track options. Career counseling focuses on feasibility of decisions based on students' interests, talents and abilities. Through partnerships with career resources, appropriate referrals are made to industry and to internships.

Tutorials

Tutorials:

One-on-one and small group sessions are provided to students in math, reading, writing and other subjects. Technology tutorials are also available. (See Computer paragraph.)

Testing Accommodations:

Testing accommodations on Student Support's site are provided to eligible students based on documentation. Accommodations might include extended time, alternate testing site, proctors, readers or scribes. All students must notify instructors of testing accommodations each semester. The program's policies and procedures are explained to students and faculty in writing. Academic integrity is not compromised.

Computer and Assistive Technology Services

Computer and Assistive Technology Services:

The program's Computer Resource Center is home to state-of- the-art computers and Assistive Technology. As defined by the Technology-Related Assistance Act of 1998, Assistive Technology is "used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities." Program students have access to screen readers, text enlargers, voice recognition software, embossers, scanning/reading systems, electronic spellers, software tutorial packages and more.

Sign Language Interpreter Services:

Student Support provides interpreter services to deaf/hard of hearing students. Services are available in classrooms and for other college programs/services/activities.

Securing Alternate Format Textbooks:

As of July 29, 2003, New York State Education Law (Chapter 219, Section 715) now requires that disability offices, such as Student Support, secure alternate format textbooks for students with print disabilities. Alternate formats texts are CD ROMS with the same text material as printed textbooks.

Eligible students are advised to speak to their counselor prior to the commencement of the semester for all relevant information.

Priority Advisement/Registration/Financial Aid:

Student Support offers these services on its premises to facilitate all business and academic concerns. Advisors remain available throughout the calendar year. They should be consulted whenever there are business-related questions or concerns.
