A Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Vision Care Technology at City Tech!

The Department of Vision Care Technology is the only nationally accredited opticianry program within The City University of New York. Ophthalmic dispensers practice their profession in a variety of professional settings, including retail optical stores, private ophthalmology and optometry offices, hospital clinics and wholesale optical companies. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and is the largest opticianry program in the nation. The associate degree in ophthalmic dispensing prepares a student for national certification and state licensure. The graduate of the associate degree program is eligible to take national examinations administered by the ABO (American Board of Opticianry) and NCLE (National Contact Lens Examination). In addition, only an associate degree in ophthalmic dispensing from a program accredited by the Commission on Opticianry Accreditation will qualify graduates to take other state board licensing examinations. Many of our graduates enroll in the CUNY BA/BS program and major in areas such as business or science. A number of graduates enroll in the City Tech BS program in Health Services Administration.

As a Vision Care Technology student at City Tech, you will benefit from:

  • A friendly and professional atmosphere
  • Individual attention to your academic and professional growth
  • State-of-the-Art, well-equipped ophthalmic laboratories and clinical facilities that duplicate on-the-job professional settings
  • Hands-on experience for practical professional skills

The Department of Vision Care Technology has a nationally renowned faculty with individual expertise in ophthalmic dispensing and materials, theoretical optics, sports vision, refractometry, contact lens fitting, and business. The faculty works closely with the professional community to provide state-of-the-art technical skills in vision care technology.

The mission of the Vision Care Technology Department is to provide the student with the academic, technical and clinical skills in the area of licensed opticianry that will allow the student to become a productive and contributing member of society and the ophthalmic profession.

Thank you for your interest in our program. Please feel free to contact us for further information about our program and opportunities. I look forward to speaking with you soon!
