Career and Technology Teacher Education

Career and Technology Teacher EducationGraduates of the Career Teacher Education program are employed in a variety of settings such as programs in public high schools, private trade schools, Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES), private industry, and occupational rehabilitation centers of correctional and mental health institutions. Many of our graduates go on to graduate school to prepare for careers in college teaching or public school administration.

The demand for technology teachers in New York City and the rest of New York State, as well as along the Eastern Seaboard from Virginia to Florida, far outstrips the supply of teachers. Over the past five years, every City Tech graduating senior in Technology Teacher Education who passed the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations received more than one job offer to begin teaching in the semester immediately following graduation. This is a trend that will continue for the foreseeable future.

The high demand for technology teachers has also meant that our graduates command a higher salary with the baccalaureate degree than beginning teachers of other subjects with the master's degree. Individuals who have expertise or interest in information technology (IT), including computer applications and networking, find that completing the degree in technology education gives them a competitive edge whether in the schools or in business and industry. Although the primary goal of the Technology Teacher Education program is to prepare competent technology teachers, alternate career opportunities exist for graduates of the program. Many graduates have established careers in business and industry, taking advantage of their technical expertise and their liberal arts and professional education with its emphasis on human development and learning.
