Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education

The New York City College of Technology, in the heart of vibrant downtown Brooklyn, introduces a new and unique four-year Bachelor's degree to prepare mathematics teachers for middle school and high school. Our program is designed to prepare mathematics teachers with a solid pedagogical foundation that is complemented by an extensive mathematical background. The program is accredited by the New York State Education Department.

Program Highlights:

  • Elective courses designed to provide a broad foundation in the application of mathematical principles.
  • Preparation for Master's degree programs in either mathematics education or pure mathematics.
  • An international faculty of more than 40 dedicated professors in both mathematics and mathematics education. The 18 professors who are most heavily involved in program are listed at right.

Admissions into the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education

Freshman Criteria:

  • Must be CUNY proficient (reading, writing, and math)
  • Minimum SAT of 500 Verbal/Critical Reading, and 500 Math
  • Minimum 3 units of high school math (should prepare them to enter MAT1475)

Transfer Criteria:

  • Must be CUNY proficient (reading, writing, and math)
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for current CUNY students
  • Must have completed prerequisites for MAT1475 or higher

Field Experience and Student Teaching

Field experience is of fundamental importance to our mathematics education program. Through field experiences, teacher candidates get hands-on experience teaching in high school and middle school classrooms under the supervision of an experienced teacher.

Preliminary field experiences begin in the junior year, where teacher candidates spend 6 hours per week over 20 weeks working in a middle school and a high school classroom. They are immersed in all aspect of teaching including the creation of lesson plans, assessment, and classroom management. In addition, teacher candidates will work with small groups of students and assist the teacher during lessons.

In the senior year, teacher candidates have two classroom placements, one in a middle school classroom and one in a high school classroom. In each placement, the field-based experience involves 20 days or 120 hours of supervised student teaching in grades 7 through 9, and 10 through 12, respectively. Under the guidance and supervision of an experienced teacher and a faculty member, students will implement and refine pedagogical strategies, classroom management techniques, and assessment approaches.

New York State Certification for Math Educators

The initial certification of a mathematics teacher candidate in New York State includes the following:

  • Performance Assessment (Portfolio)
  • Written Assessments: Content Specialty Test(s)
  • Writing Skills; Educating All Students
