Students graduating with a degree in human services are prepared to become members of a profession that works with individuals to assist them with learning how to problem solve. Students learn how to utilize an eclectic approach that blends various theoretical approaches to problem-solving, helping individuals to attain their highest levels of functioning.

In the baccalaureate degree program, students have the option of selecting one of the following areas of concentration: alcohol and substance abuse treatment, child welfare and family services, human services for the older adult, and human services for disabled and physically challenged persons.

At the associate degree level, students are provided with academic and professional preparation, job readiness and resume writing skills. They are also helped to develop a professional portfolio.

Classes are held during the day, in the evening and on Saturday, offering scheduling flexibility.

Professional Internships

Internships are an important component of the degree and certificate programs. Students are placed in such agencies and organizations as:

In the associate degree program, students have the opportunity to receive Credit by Examination for prior experience in fieldwork (HS 305).

Accreditation

Our degree programs are accredited by the Council for Standards in Human Services Education.

Bachelor of Science in Human Services

The total number of credits required for completing the bachelor of science degree is 120:
31credits in the major area, 23 credits in the core area and six credits in the required electives area. Of the 31 credits in the major course area, eight are those of the Professional Internship requiring 200 hours a semester for two semesters.

Associate in Applied Science in Human Services

The total number of credits required for completing the associate in applied science degree is 60: 25 credits in the major course area, 20 credits in the core area and 15 in other required elective courses. Of the 25 required credits in the major course area, six are the Field Internship which consists of two semesters, each requiring 125 hours per semester.

Child Welfare Certificate Program

The child welfare certificate program requires a total of 30 credits: 12 credits in the major course area,15 credits in other required courses and three as the liberal arts elective. These 30 credits are applicable to the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Human Services.

The Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor and Trainee Program

The Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) and Trainee Program is offered as an 18-month evening program that meets three nights per week for three semesters and partial summer study. A total of 33 credits is required. Students learn the theoretical foundations of alcoholism and substance abuse and will develop skills in counseling techniques, assessment, case management, discharge planning and professional/ethical reponsibilities.
