Susan Lifrieri graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1981. She worked at the Helmsley Palace Hotel from 1981-1985. She started in the Garde Manger station doing banquets then moved up to assistant pastry chef under Cher Andre Renee.

During that time she started studying with Chef Albert Kumin at the International Pastry Arts Center from 1984-1988. She was the opening pastry chef at Aurora under Chef Gerard Pangaud from 1985-1987. Susan moved on to the opening crew of a small French bistro, La Metarie and was pastry chef from 1987-1988.

From there she went on to become the pastry chef at the Manhatten Ocean Club for seven years. She started teaching pastry at the French Culinary Institute in 1995 and became the Director of Faculty Administration in 1999 until 2006. Susan has a diploma in Artisanal Bread Baking from the FCI. She is an Officer of the Treasury for the Society Culinaire Philanthropique and a member of Woman Chefs and Restaurateurs, The James Beard Foundation and The International Association of Culinary Professionals.
