Welcome to the World of Entertainment Technology!

Have you ever been to a live show and wondered who did the lighting? The sound? The video? The pyrotechnics? The scenery? Well, wonder no more. Come to City Tech and learn how it's done, in the heart of the entertainment technology world-New York City!

The World of Entertainment Technology

The Entertainment Technology program trains students for careers backstage at concerts, corporate and special events, cruise ships, film/television productions, sports venues, theatres, theme parks, trade shows and even pro wrestling. This exciting and-most of all-fun industry offers a unique career path for each student, depending on his or her individual interests. One City Tech graduate might go off to tour the world doing sound for a concert tour; another might work in a scenic shop, building high-tech, mechanized scenic effects; and still another might work for a system contractor designing or installing entertainment and audiovisual systems into permanent, architectural venues.

What We Offer

Our faculty comes from a broad variety of entertainment technology backgrounds, and all use their professional experience to train in our 40,000 square foot training laboratories and performance venues. Our labs have been stocked with state-of-the-art lighting, sound, show control and video equipment thanks to a substantial grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and generous support from the entertainment technology industry. Our lighting system laboratory is equipped with moving lights, WYSIWYG visualization software, and gear from ETC, High End/Flying Pig, Strand, Rosco and many other manufacturers. Our sound training facility features 15 fully equipped Digidesign Pro Tools workstations, along with equipment from Meyer, Apogee, Crown, LCS, Richmond Sound Design, BSS/Sound Web and many others. Our show control lab, one of the few in the world, includes show control systems from Avenger, Dataton, Gilderfluke and Richmond Sound Design. A fully equipped performance venue dedicated to the Entertainment Technology Department allows students the ability to experiment within a theatrical environment. In addition, a motion control laboratory allows students to integrate all technical components using appropriate technology. A wide variety of test equipment, along with audio/video presentation tools, rounds out our inventory.

Who We Train

The department is structured to accommodate full- and part-time students of all ages. We serve beginners looking to break into the industry, as well as seasoned pros and IATSE Union members who would like to update their skills to keep up with the demands of new technology in this ever-accelerating market.
