Proficiency in English is a key to success in all your academic pursuits at City Tech. The English department's developmental courses in reading, writing, and English as a Second Language can prepare you for successful completion of the CUNY Skills Assessment Tests, including the ACT. All programs of study at the college leading to a degree require the successful completion of English Composition. An additional number of credits in writing and literature are required for specific degree curricula. Literacy, the effective use of the English language through improved reading and writing skills, is a primary goal of the department.

Another goal is to give you a clear understanding of the complexity of the human condition through literature and research. By gaining insight through language into the individual, the community, the nation and the world, you can step with confidence into the responsibilities of citizenship and enhance personal growth in their chosen careers.

Students do not apply for admission to the English department. The courses in the department are part of degree-granting programs. Students should be guided in selecting courses in the department by the statement of requirements for the specific programs in which they are enrolled. A wide variety of courses are offered in three specific disciplines: developmental English, credit-level English and literature.
