A Message from the Chair

Welcome to the English Department's website. Our writing courses are designed to help you become a more experienced and confident writer. Each year, students from every degree program at New York City College of Technology take introductory and advanced writing courses, as well as career writing, creative writing, journalism, and technical writing. Some of our writing courses are partially online, fully online, or meet in a computer classroom. We also offer non-credit courses for students who may need more extensive preparation in reading and writing to succeed in college.

Starting in spring 2015, the English Department is offering a Bachelor of Science in Professional and Technical Writing. Through our program, students will study writing and editing, document design, rhetoric, problem solving, collaboration, interpersonal communication, specialized expertise, and fluency in modern communication technologies. Career opportunities include technical writers, information architects, instructional designers, and usability professionals. For more information on our degree, email ptw@citytech.cuny.edu.

English Department literature courses allow you to explore a genre like poetry or fiction, a theme such as immigration or humor, or an important author. Among our diverse course offerings are world literature, American literature, British literature, Asian American literature, literature and film, and science fiction. Some of our upper-level literature courses rotate as faculty members explore new research areas. We are offering a new upper-level course on Gothic literature and visual culture. Our literature courses help students fulfill CUNY Pathways Flexible Core and College Option requirements–check the college catalog for specific courses and designations.

The English department sponsors an annual Literary Arts Festival featuring guest writers and a college-wide creative writing competition. We also publish The Journal of Urban Technology, the creative writing journal Two Bridges Review, and NANO: New American Notes Online. Outstanding student writing from all disciplines is featured in the annual college-wide publication City Tech Writer.
