The electrical engineering technology program is designed to prepare graduates for career as electrical or electronics technicians. The curriculum includes a balanced distribution of lecture and laboratory courses, which provide an introduction to the design and development of basic electronic projects. Laboratory construction projects range form elementary circuit analysis to microprocessors. The computers are used as a learning tool throughout the curriculum. The department provides their graduated with a deep knowledge of technology coupled with a sound general education.
Major responsibilities of electronic technicians are mostly in maintenance and control of the installed equipment; however, the tendency is to involve them in design, development, and research. The electronics technician usually works as part of an engineering team, which may include electrical engineers, engineering technicians and draftsmen. In a group concerned with engineering design, the electronics technician may determine the positions of electronic components on a panel or chassis, suggest design modifications to facilitate production, perform design calculations for engineers, prepares specifications for materials and components, estimate cost of design alternative and help write user and technical manuals for electronic equipment users. When working in research and development, the electronics technician may construct breadboard layouts of electronic devices, make experimental chassis and cabinets for prototype equipment, and setup special environmental and performance tests for new products.
Graduates may work as electrical and electronic engineering technicians and continue their education to earn a bachelors degree. Employers of recent graduates include LIRR, MTA, Citicorp, Board of Education, Verizon, AST, Western Union, SIAC, Avaya, NYPD, Chase Manhattan Bank and IST.
