Professional Experience and Research
Ms. Shields joined Hardesty & Hanover, a leading bridge engineering consulting firm, in 2001. Serving as a Project Engineer, Gerarda was responsible for various structural and hydraulic engineering projects. Ms. Shields is particularly interested in scour engineering, a specialized division of hydraulic engineering. Scour is the erosive action of water on soil which effects the stability of bridge piers in both tidal and riverine waterways. Ms. Shields has experience with monitoring bridges classified as "scour critical" and has partaken in the development of the Scour Monitoring Program Manual for Long Island Bridges (2nd Edition) and in NCHRP Synthesis research on fixed scour monitoring instrumentation.
