A Message from the Chair

I would like to introduce myself; my name is Professor Anthony Cioffi, Chair of the Department of Construction Management and Civil Engineering Technology (CMCE) at New York City College of Technology (City Tech). It seems like only yesterday that I was a student in the Construction Technology Department. I can tell you first-hand how the department has affected my life. I graduated in 1979 with an A.A.S. degree in Construction Technology from what was then known as New York City Community College. At the advice of a wise chairman, I continued my education. I graduated with a bachelor and master degrees in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College in 1981 and 1988, respectively. Throughout my college days I maintained close contact with the CMCE department faculty. I began my teaching career as a tutor, college laboratory technician, and finally as an Adjunct Professor. This was all done at night while I was working for a large engineering firm in the metropolitan area. In 1991, I joined the faculty full-time. Today, I am the department chair!

The CMCE department offers four programs: bachelor of technology in Construction Technology; associate of applied science in Civil Engineering Technology; associate of applied science in Construction Management Technology; and a certificate in Construction Management. As a career department, we are unique within The City University of New York by offering you the opportunity to pursue either a more management-based or design-based track. With the introduction of our bachelor of technology (BTech) degree in Construction Technology in spring 2014, the department's offerings are more diverse than ever. You can now choose to enroll in the associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Management Technology or directly into the BTech in Construction Technology. The BTech degree is designed as a 2+2 program where all of the credits earned in the AAS degree can be used to fulfill the requirements of the BTech degree should you decide to continue your education after the Associate Degree. We give you the flexibility to choose between day or evening courses and now offer some courses on weekends or online.

Our faculty consists of licensed Professional Engineers and Registered Architects who are actively engaged in the civil engineering, architecture and construction industries. These professionals bring real life applications of the theory into the classroom environment. The faculty takes a personal interest in the success of their students and graduates. New York City, especially lower Manhattan is undergoing major changes; jobs will be created in every sector of the construction field.

In addition to our faculty and staff, we have an active Advisory Commission. The Advisory Commission is made up of professionals from some of the top Engineering and Construction firms in New York City and the Country. Through the Department Advisory Commission, we are establishing an internship program for students who have completed a minimum of 45 credits. This will give students the chance to gain valuable insight into the construction industry, while possibly earning college credits and a salary.

Thank you for your interest in our programs. I hope City Tech can be part of your future success!
