Why You Should Consider Chemical Technology
at New York City College of Technology
Graduates have found rewarding employment as chemical and research
technicians in the following fields: pharmaceuticals, food, plastics,
petroleum, paints, textiles. Ample opportunity exists for advancement
in research, analysis, production and sales. Graduates of this program
are employed at Eastman Kodak Company, Ciba Geigy, Consolidated Edison,
Brooklyn Union Gas, International Flavors and Fragrances, and Pfizer,
Inc., to name a few.
1. Average salary for Chemists is $70,000/year. Unemployment in the Chemical Industry is down to two percent (Chemical and Engineering News, August 14, 2000).
2. The Chemical Technology Program at City Tech obtained more than $2 million dollars in new equipment in the last two years. The labs at City Tech are modern and well equipped, duplicating on-the-job conditions.
3. Graduates with a Chemical Technology AAS degree
can enter the work force
immediately or continue their education towards higher degrees in
Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Education, or Pharmacy.
4. The Chemical Technology Program has articulation (credit transfer) agreements with numerous local colleges such as LIU, Brooklyn College, Hunter College, City College of New York (CCNY) and St. Francis for student wishing to pursue advanced degrees.
5. Research opportunities are available. Chemical Technology students have published in well-recognized journals and presented their results at national meetings. Qualified students are paid to work at NYCCT as research assistants. One NYCCT student was employed as a research assistant at Harvard University during the summer.

7. NYCCT has an active Chemistry Club, which provides opportunities for professional development and networking. The club visits industries such as Sun Chemicals, International Flavors and Fragrances, and research labs such as Brookhaven National Laboratories. Guest speakers also come to the campus. There are also social activities.
8. Graduates have continued their education at prestigious schools, such as UCLA Medical College, Ohio State, Rutgers University, pursuing degrees in medicine, chemistry, and pharmacy.
9. The Workshop Chemistry Program offers the opportunity for peer-led group learning experiences and tutoring. Employment opportunities as Workshop leaders are available for promising students. Scholarships for Workshop leaders interested in teaching are available through City College of New York (CCNY).
