The department of architectural technology constructed the program based on a three-part foundation of educational topics that builds to create a diverse pre-professional program in the field of architecture. The complexity and depth of topics progresses through the two year and four year programs while incorporating the humanities, math and science to create a solid education in architectural technology.
The vast majority of work in the greater metropolitan area is renovated, not new construction. At City Tech, the program has been adapted to teach both new and renovation techniques to better equip the student with marketable and time sensitive skills necessary in the workforce today. This type of approach also serves as a firm foundation for those seeking advanced education as a Historic Preservationist or in the career of architectural preservation.
Our location in the geographic center of New York City makes us within reach of many local resources and sites to demonstrate superior architectural design to our students. Field trips, site surveys, design competitions, local impact studies, site modeling and historic research papers all incorporate New York City architecture as their greater topic of study. Woven throughout the courses are New York City site specific examinations that allow our students to learn from the wealth of planning, architectural and construction knowledge accessible.
Technology has changed both the way we work and what we can create as architects. Incorporated into the program is a contemporary understanding of how technology supports architecture in design and in production. Students are trained in the use of autocad, supported by other maya, viz, microsoft word, excel, access, illustrator, adobe photoshop, and dreamweaver. They understand the practical applications of these programs and how to best use them to express their individual designs, thoughts and presentations.
