I entered the learning communities a year ago and there was a group of students that were all in the same classes. And it was more of a community. Everybody worked together, the professors and the students were all connected.

My transition from high school to college was a big shocker. I was very nervous my first day here. I see it’s very different. I mean in college you’re your own person. People don’t just do things for you, they don’t show you things step-by-step. You have to just go out there and figure it out and do everything on your own. It was a big transition.

Joining the Learning Communities is one of the most important first steps a student can make here at City Tech. There is so much to learn, so much support. It’s one of the best things that you can do for yourself while you are here.

It is a great program to help you to adjust because coming from high school is a big adjustment. It’s a lot of studying. It’s a lot of exams. If you have the support system there you should just take it. By having that community it will help me to make my college years a little lighter.

At first I didn’t like working in a group because I was afraid that my ideas would not be interesting to the other people in the group. But at first when I started joining the group because of my professor, I really realized that my opinion matters and I really enjoyed it.

You feel comfortable when you work with people, on a daily basis like that. Because you know the people it’s not the same as when you are working with different people every time you do a project…you know the people and you know what they’re capable of doing.

I like working in groups because you get to work with different people and in real life society you have to work with people and, you know, get people skills and you get to work with different kinds of people characteristics and learn how to be able to stand, you know, stand them and everything, so it’s good because you get to work together and get ready for real life society.

For me, I made a lot of friends being in this group and now I can go through the semester and I’m still in contact with the same people so for someone coming in that feels good if you’re shy and you don’t know anyone this helps you to befriend others.

The best part of the Learning Community is the web-based technology that is a part of the Learning Community. In this area you can communicate with your teachers, you can communicate with your group and interact with all the subjects that you are doing at that time.

When I started school I didn’t know the use of computer. You know, and going to classes, and going to computer lab an the learning center, I got a little tutoring, and it did help me.

Blackboard system is a system on the internet teachers were able to email you and you were able to email teachers. You had to post discussions with other classmates. You had to post some research projects by a certain time on the internet where everybody could help you out and check each other’s work.

I did use Blackboard, it gave me the ability to log in and look at my grades and just kind of see what’s posted as far as tests that are coming to date or any notes so it’s very useful. I’m actually using Blackboard for my major now so it really kicks in. I know how to use it from the learning community so it really helped me out a lot.

If you were absent you could just go on the internet at home and just get it. Or if a classmate of mine was absent I could just post the homework on the internet, and they would get it as well.

What I would like to tell students who would like to join the Learning Community is that the learning community is very helpful. I mean you get to meet people…you get, the professors are so nice, they’re understanding, they give you so much information, they’re with you if you have any difficulties. And as I tell you it’s a good beginning to start. Because especially when you’re making that transition from high school to college, to have people who are really helping you and understanding what college life is all about and that’s what the learning community was for me and I learned a lot and it benefited me especially for my academic year.
