Freshman Year Program

The Freshman Year Program at New York City College of Technology encompasses supportive programs for new and first-year students. It is a unified initiative that joins the Pre-Freshman Summer Skills Immersion Program, the Intersession Basic Skills Immersion Program and the Freshman Year Initiative, in addition to other distinct college services.

Immersion programs are offered to students who have not satisfied one or more basic skills requirements, following results from their ACT test scores. The summer program allows students to take remedial Math, Reading, Writing or ESL classes in order to address their basic skills needs before the fall semester begins. Classes are available in June, July and August during the day and evening hours. All classes are tuition-free. The Intersession Basic Skills Immersion Program mirrors the summer program, but is a shorter and more intensive program during the month of January. Selected students are offered instruction in basic skills and are provided with the opportunity to retake freshman skills assessment tests (ACT) that were not passed at the end of the fall semester.

Recent studies have shown that students who participated in the Summer Immersion Program performed better and were retained at a higher rate than students who were under-prepared, but did not participate in the program. Please see the schedules for specific program information. For schedule information click here.
