Division of Continuing Education

The Division of Continuing Education offers an array of programming for over 9,000 students each year, serving businesses, union members, incumbent workers, career changers, those in need of basic skills, professionals in need of CEU's, and those wishing to engage in lifelong learning for personal enrichment.

Non-credit and credit programs are provided on campus as well as off site at business, industry and community locations. Supported by tuition from individuals, public and private sector grants, contracts with business and industry, and union and other vouchers, programs operate in an environment where teaching and learning flourish.

CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Continuing Studies Center (CSC)

The Continuing Studies Center courses and intensive training programs are available to the general public and provide career enhancing skills for adults in an increasingly competitive job market. Well recognized and reasonably priced offerings range from Computer Office Skills and Medical Office Assistant to Welding, PC Support and Network Technologies to locksmithing. In addition, the Center works collaboratively with the College's academic departments to develop courses such as the Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counseling (CASAC) and Ophthalmic Dispensing, designed to support the professional growth of City Tech alumni. The Center works closely with municipal and state licensing and certifying authorities in areas such as pollution control, fire safety and real estate to provide approved qualifying courses that help insure high standards in public sector service providers. An array of adult learning classes such as Tae Kwon Do, Wine Tasting and Interior Design provide thought provoking, interesting learning experiences for adults for fun, relaxation and personal interest.

Business and Industry Training Center (BITC)

With more than 20 years of experience, the Business and Industry Training Center offers technical and non-technical training customized to meet the specific needs of active New York City businesses. Training can be delivered in company settings or City Tech's labs and classrooms. Although most workforce development courses are non-credit, the Center also partners with other departments of the College to offer credit programs. Former and current partners include: Verizon, Bear Stearns, NYC Human Resource Administration, the US Postal Service, Mt. Sinai Hospital and Domino Sugar.

Apartment House Institute (AHI)

The Apartment House Institute provides a variety of education and information service to owners, managers, and superintendents of multifamily buildings, and individuals, who have significant input into operation and maintenance of these buildings. The Institute offers courses in Management of Affordable Housing that leads to a Certificate in Housing Management. The Superintendents' Club of New York, a technical society, is operated by AHI.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMS

Access for Women

Access for Women welcomes women who are interested in exploring career opportunities in non-traditional technical fields such as construction, building trades and engineering technologies. Access for Women provides classes, workshops, basic skills, math and vocational training for unemployed and underemployed women. Counseling and support services are provided to college students enrolled in technical programs and orientation sessions for the technologies are arranged for young women in middle and high schools.

Adult Learning Center

The Adult Learning Center offers free literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction at all levels. Classes in basic education, math, ESL, and preparation for the GED examination meet during the day, in the evening and on Saturday. Sessions are also held at off-campus facilities in the community. In addition to classroom instruction, students have the opportunity to learn basic computer skills and utilize our computer labs for Internet research, write papers and improve their literacy and language skills. Counseling and support services are provided.

Workforce Development Services/ACCESS Counseling Center

Since 1990, the ACCESS Counseling Center has provided a broad range of workforce preparation and education services to students enrolled in the Division of Continuing Education and to other adult residents of New York City. These services include assessment, counseling, information and referral, case management, career exploration workshops, skills training and job development/job placement. ACCESS works closely with other units of the College, as well as with education and human service providers to develop and coordinate activities and programs.

CUNY COLLABORATIVE PROGRAMS

CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP)

The CUNY Language Immersion Program, a Chancellor's initiative that operates at eight CUNY colleges, opened at City Tech in July 1996. The program offers newly admitted CUNY students who are not native English speakers the opportunity to devote an intensive period of time to improving their English language skills before enrolling in credit courses. It is also open to some college students who have not been successful in their college ESL courses. The program offers both day and evening classes, and each class meets for 25 hours a week. Reading, writing, listening and speaking are integrated into a holistic approach to language development. While enrolled in CLIP students defer their college admission and do not use their financial aid.

High School Transitions

High School Transitions is a six-week summer intensive English language program for immigrant students in ESL or bilingual programs who are about to enter high school. The goal of the Transitions enrichment program is to enable student to successfully participate in all classes upon entering high school. The theme-based curriculum provides a framework around which students read, write, do research projects, learn to use the computer for word processing and Internet research, and improve oral communication skills. An academic-year program on Saturdays helps students to continue to improve their skills and provide enrichment activities. Individual and small group counseling are provided. This free program is a collaborative project of the City University of New York Division of Adult and Continuing Education and the New York City Board of Education, Office of Bilingual/ESL Programs.
