City Tech Yellow Jackets Defeat Fairleigh Dickinson

Jamaal Hall, a triple threat

The City Tech Yellow Jackets came into Klitgord Center Gymnasium with a purpose last Tuesday night. They were facing Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), a team they had been unable to defeat in previous seasons. Lead by their two returning seniors, guard Jamaal Hall and forward Ryan Phillip, City Tech came out with intensity and a determination to win. The final score was 88-80, a well-deserved victory for the Yellow Jackets.

The City Tech team enjoyed great production from their two star seniors, Hall and Phillip.  Hall did not disappoint fans, demonstrating the kind of outstanding play they have come to expect from him. He lead the team with 25 points, but even more impressive is the fact that he also led the team in rebounding with 11 rebounds. Add 10 assists to this already stellar performance and Hall had the first triple-double of the season in the CUNYAC conference.  Phillip, hindered by early foul trouble, battled away in the paint, contributing 20 points and 6 rebounds.

This was an intense, fast-paced crowd pleaser with the Yellow Jackets leading at times by as much as 20. The Yellow Jackets pressed Fairleigh Dickinson through most of the game and played tight man to man defense, causing them to turn over the ball 28 times. They made FDU pay for those turnovers, which resulted in 28 Yellow Jacket points. The speedy Yellow Jacket front court scored 14 of the team’s points on fast breaks, largely orchestrated by the Hall-to-Phillip combination that City Tech has enjoyed for the last 3 years.

Playing at such a fast pace causes a team to look to their bench for subs, to give their starters a rest from time to time. The Yellow Jacket bench had great production, with a total of 24 points. Freshman center James Abrams gave the Yellow Jackets a boost, contributing 13 points and 7 rebounds. This was complemented by a 10 point contribution from sophomore guard Roman Perez.

The Yellow Jackets are looking good early in the season and are sure to give fans something to watch as the season continues. No one who saw the men’s home opener will want to miss even a single game.
