Students Are All Smiles Again Over College Response to ‘Send a Soldier a Smile Campaign’
New York City College of Technology dental hygiene and veteran students are all smiles again over the College’s response to their second annual on-campus effort to raise money toward the purchase of basic dental hygiene supplies for U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the heat of the ongoing conflict in those two countries, such supplies are sometimes hard to come by and, if available, costly to purchase on an armed forces salary. In that part of the world, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash and dental floss don’t come cheap.
The students’ effort, known as the “Send a Soldier a Smile Campaign,” gained nationwide attention in spring 2007 thanks to Daily News and other media coverage. The two student groups first conducted a highly successful on-campus fundraising effort, followed by an equally successful outdoor appeal among the thousands of people who visit Brooklyn Borough Hall and the city, state and federal courts that surround Downtown Brooklyn’s Columbus Park on a daily basis. Both efforts exceeded their wildest expectations, and in addition to making cash contributions, hundreds of contributors wrote notes of appreciations to our troops in the Middle East. These were later sent to military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan, together with thousands of dollars in dental healthcare supplies.
On Thursday, April 17, from 12 to 2 p.m., the students will again take their campaign to the general public in a second annual fundraising drive in Columbus Park. In addition to accepting cash donations, they’ll also be selling quality manufacturer-donated toothbrushes at a fraction of their usual cost. Look for them there and help send a soldier a smile.
