New CUNY Awards and Scholarship Website Now Online
For students who seek nationally recognized awards and scholarships to further academic studies and burnish their credentials, The City University of New York has created a consolidated website and expanded campus-based guidance for major national scholarships and fellowships available at distinguished foreign and U.S. universities.
The site, www.cuny.edu/pretigious, developed by James Airozo, CUNY’s director of student academic awards and honors, is an excellent source of information about a variety of prestigious and highly competitive awards, such as the Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall, Truman and Goldwater Scholarships, that attract top applicants from around the country.
CUNY students have won all of these competitive scholarships and fellowships in a variety of fields in recent years, and this site will help prepare new applicants to follow in their footsteps.
Tips and suggestions such as how to get a head start by applying early and attending workshops about the scholarship or fellowship you are interested in are designed to put you ahead of the curve.
The Frequently Asked Questions section explains the application process, giving students advice and information on requirements, which may include doing personal interviews, writing personal essays and getting letters of recommendation from professors.
CUNY advisers are prepared to assist every step of the way, whether it is choosing the scholarship or fellowship or setting up a mock interview panel for finalists to polish presentations and get feedback on performances.
The site includes:
- Short profiles of recent CUNY winners
- Summaries and eligibility requirements of 25 prestigious scholarships and fellowships, complete with links to their websites
- A calendar of application deadlines
- A list of scholarship advisers for each campus and their contact information
Scholarship and fellowship winners often go on to make significant contributions to the arts and humanities, scientific research, public affairs, government service, law and medicine.
