Vision Care Technology and SEEK Students Honored at Separate Spring 2009 Awards Ceremonies
Several outstanding New York City College of Technology students were honored during the spring semester in separate ceremonies hosted by the Department of Vision Care Technology and the SEEK (Search for Education and Elevation Through Knowledge) Program.

Pictured above, from left to right, are New York State Society of Opticians (NYSSO) President Richard Bauman, Kimberly Strickler, Department of Vision Care Technology Professor Robert Russo, department chair, student Melina Toussaint, Instructor Thomas Woods and ProfessorJeffrey Seigel. Ms. Toussaint was presented with NYSSO’s 2009 $500 Future of Opticianry Scholarship Award in recognition of her academic achievements and promising future in the field at a ceremony on May 21.
Also honored with a $250 NYSSO Student Scholarship was student Anne Marten. Professor Russo also presented the $250 Joseph. L. Bacotti Scholarship Award to outstanding student Jenny Kam on behalf of the Opticians Alliance of New York. Professor Bascotti founded the department more than 40 years ago and the scholarship in his memory is presented to an honoree who has displayed high ethical and moral conduct as a student.

In separate ceremonies during February and May, 2009, SEEK program students Concepcion Avila, liberal arts, and Christina Nelson, hospitality management, were presented $300 James Bryant, Jr. Memorial Awards in recognition of their dedication to academic excellence and their extensive use of SEEK services to advance their academic careers. The SEEK program serves a select group of students, offering individualized personal services. In addition to providing extra financial assistance, SEEK offers a wide range of academic support and counseling services, including freshman orientation programs, a state-of-the art computer lab, career exploration, tutoring in all areas, personal counseling and academic planning.
