Veterans Day Ceremonies Salute CUNY Fallen

From left, Wilfred Cotto, CUNY coordinator for veterans affairs, AJ Luna, City Tech veteran services coordinator and Paul Schwartz, LCSW, City Tech veteran students faculty advisor, were among those who gathered at Brooklyn College on November 10, 2007, for this year’s Veterans Day Ceremonies, hosted by the College’s Veteran Students Organization and the Veterans Day Program Committee.

The event began with the posting of the colors and a salute to the fallen soldiers from CUNY who have given their lives in the service of their country in Iraq. These include Army Spc Segun Frederick Akintade (New York City College of Technology), Army Pfc Francis C. Obaji (College of Staten Island), Army Pfc James E. Prevete (Queens College), and Army Pfc Min Soo Choi (John Jay College). Also saluted were the ongoing contributions of U.S. military personnel currently serving overseas.

The Brooklyn VA Men’s Quartet sang the National Anthem, followed by New York State Senator Kevin Parker’s (21st District/Brooklyn) keynote address and a roll call read by C Company of 1/69th Infantry, a New York Army National Guard battalion based in Manhattan. A luncheon followed the ceremonies in the Brooklyn College Student Center.

The event was co-sponsored by the CUNY Veterans Affairs Liaison Steering Committee; Brooklyn College’s Office of Affirmative Action, Compliance and Diversity, Division of Student Life & Student Affairs, Veterans Affairs & Counseling Center and Panamanian Students Organization; New York City College of Technology’s Office of Student Life & Development; the Brooklyn VA Men’s Quartet; the soldiers of C Company, 1/69th Infantry; the American Basketball Association’s New York City Internationalz; and the Barnes & Noble Student Life Fund.
