Five Saluted at Restorative Dentistry Alumni Reunion
The Department of Restorative Dentistry at New York City College of Technology saluted four National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology 45-year Certified Dental Technicians at an alumni reunion attended by 132 department graduates, faculty, students and others guests on Saturday, September 20, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. Saluted, from left to right, were Howard Dickens, Charles Cottone, Sol Greenberg and Lawrence Araneo. Cottone, Greenberg and Araneo are members of department faculty. In addition, Dr. Burney Croll of Manhattan also was recognized as the first ever Honorary Certified Dental Technician for his unselfish and dedicated support for the dental profession.
The reunion and ceremony were held in conjunction with the 2008 International Education Congress of Dental Technology, the largest such conference in the East, which attracted more than 2,000 participants. The City Tech reunion was the final event of the weekend and received an overwhelmingly positive response from all in attendance as well as from the New York State Dental Laboratory Association (DLANY) board. Nobel Biocare Corporation graciously hosted the City Tech reunion, thanks to the efforts of Procera Special Projects Manager and City Tech alumnus Norman Russell and colleague Jerry Vogel.
Coordinated by Professor Nicholas Manos, former restorative dentistry department chair and event master of ceremonies, this was the first department alumni reunion in more than 15 years. The event took a year to organize and was greatly welcomed by all in attendance. According to one national guest, "Now we know why City Tech is a model the rest of the nation should follow."
Professor Manos recognized the following City Tech officials and DLANY members for their dedication, hard work and financial assistance in putting the reunion together: Executive Director Jewel Trowers Escobar, assistant Norma Khoury and the staff of the City Tech Foundation and City Tech Alumni Relations Director Helen Covington and staff and City Tech Alumni Association President Yvonne Riley-Tepie for the invitational mailings, gift bags and other support; and Special Assistant to the President for Institutional Advancement Stephen M. Soiffer and graphic design Al Vargas for 500 promotional posters designed by Vargas.
Also thanked were City Tech Office of Imagine/Visual Communications’ Omayma Stephan and Restorative Dentistry Professor Renata Bundy for additional promotional and other support; City tech Recruitment Director Paul Dorestant and Student Life Director Daniel Fictum for use of College banners, organizational advice and City Tech giveaways; Gary Spedaro and the entire DLANY board and staff for the additional publicity, ballroom and sound system; and restorative dentistry department administrative assistant Josephine Glennon for her considerable help in planning the event.
