Graduating Hospitality Management Seniors Make Class Gift to Department’s Thomas Ahrens International Study-Abroad Program

Graduating Hospitality Management Seniors Make Class Gift to Department’s Thomas Ahrens International Study-Abroad Program

It was a dazzling affair, a real red-carpet-like event with a Hollywood theme. Even the paparazzi put in an appearance – well, one paparazzi, that is, which was just fine with student photographer and website designer Tenzing Chemey, who recorded the evening on film.

“My gosh,” Chemey later wrote in a piece introducing the website photo gallery he created for the event, “the girls looked fabulous and the guys were equally dashing. Nah, the girls looked better!” Well, you can judge for yourself by clicking on the link provided at the bottom of this story.

Hospitality industry “celebs” Salvatore Rizzo and Jimmy Chin were presented the 2007 dinner’s equivalent of the “Oscars.” A City Tech graduate, Rizzo, director of culinary events at Karlitz & Company, NYC, a leading culinary marketing and events production firm in Manhattan, was named recipient of the Department of Hospitality Management’s 2007 Distinguished Alumnus Award, while Chin, regional director of risk management, North America for The Peninsula Hotels, received the 2007 Outstanding Industry Professional Award for his dedication to the hospitality field and many contributions to City Tech.

After the graduates and the honorees, the next best part of the evening, according to Chemey, was the food, which was planned and prepared by City Tech’s award-winning culinary and pastry arts students under the direction of Professors Jean Claude, Joanne Jacus and Susan Lifrieri-Lowry. And Professor Karen Goodlad and the students under her supervision did an equally outstanding job of staging the gala event in the College’s Janet Lefler Dining Room.

“City Tech has given so much to these proud graduates, who depart the College well prepared for success in the broad and rapidly growing hospitality industry,” Chemey added. “Good Luck to each and every one of them in their careers. I’m sure they will never forget their alma mater and give back to the school and department that gave so much to them. They made a great beginning through a graduating class gift to help support the department’s Thomas Ahrens International Study-Abroad Program.”
