A Busy Month for Restorative Dentistry Faculty & Students
On June 19, 2009, Professors Renata Budny and Anthony Sena, together with students from the Department of Restorative Dentistry, attended the Fourth Annual Ceramic Symposium at New York University. The event, titled “Education, the Foundation for Changing Times,” attracted dental technicians and dentists from around the world. Among the speakers were many supporters of the City Tech program, including:
- Jason Kim, CDT, “Aesthetic Design Driven Dentistry.” The presentation looked at the relationship between the clinician and ceramist in relation to patients’ needs and educating patients on what a beautiful smile really means.
- Michael A. Apa, DDS, “Dentist and Laboratory Considerations Utilizing Facial Aesthetic Designs.” The presentation detailed the alternative methods of communication between the dentist and dental technician to ensure success in restoring patients’ dentition.
- Stephen J. Chu, DMD, MSD, CDT, and Adam J. Mieleszko, CDT, “Considerations for Predictable Shade Matching with Dissimilar Materials.” The presentation examined very challenging, mixed restoration type cases where dissimilar materials like all ceramic, zirconium or Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal crowns were utilized. Adam Mieleszko, a City Tech graduate, has been recognized for his work and many innovations in the dental field.
- Peter Pizzi, CDT, MDT, FNGS, “Ceramic Light and Design.” The presentation looked at how technicians can develop a proper understanding of the internal structures that allow light to be reflected or absorbed through use of natural teeth and photography as guides.
- Michel Magne, MDT Oral Design,“The key to Ultimate Aesthetics with Bonded Restorations.” The presentation defined the knowledge and understanding of Esthetics. The emphasis was on understanding a patient’s need to be able to realize the ultimate aesthetics with bonded porcelain restorations.
During the intercessions, Rich Pavlak, Peter Pizzi, Adam Mieleszko and Jason Kim were available for discussion while conducting table demonstrations. The day-long event was well received and students had a chance to meet with doctors, dental technicians and lab owners to discuss future employment.
Earlier in the month, Professors Budny, Sena and Nicholas Manos and students attended a June 9 seminar also held at NYU, titled “A Systemic Approach to Treatment Planning Comprehensive Restorative Dentistry,” presented by Victor Avis, DDS, and Paul Federico, CDT, MDT, a NYCCT alumni, on a systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment planning. The comprehensive examination along with necessary diagnostics and risk management concepts applied in treatment planning also were discussed. The presentation sparked a lively discussion about the concepts related to creating successful and predictable dental prostheses. The event provided valuable information to practitioners as well as to the beginners in the field of dentistry.
