Repeat Screening of 'New Normal' at City Tech in November
A repeat screening of the 30-minute documentary film A New Normal: Young Men of Color, Trauma, and Engagement in Learning, sponsored by the College Counsel's Committee on Students, was held at City Tech on November 14, 2012. A stimulating panel discussion followed the screening. Picture here, left to right, are panelists Richard Osborne Morse, an independent filmmaker who filmed and edited the documentary; Jamal Stovall, a City Tech graduate now pursuing a master’s in physics at Hunter; Philippe Balan, a City Tech electrical engineering technology student; Seon Bristol, a graduate of City Tech with a BTech in facilities management; and Dr. Carlyle Van Thompson, dean of liberal arts and education at Medgar Evers College.
The documentary was produced by the husband and wife team of Paul Schwartz, LCSW, MA, a City Tech crisis counselor, and his wife, Joni Schwartz, EdD, an assistant professor at LaGuardia Community College. The documentary, based on the findings of a one-year phenomenological study that looked at the engagement of young men of color in college, was previously shown at City Tech in February 2012 and at the American College Counseling Association (ACCA) National Conference in Orlando, Florida in October of this year.
