“Give Kids a Smile Day” at New York City College of Technology attracted a capacity clientele of youngsters in early February 2009. The College’s Department of Dental Hygiene is designated as an official venue for this national event sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA).

Under the supervision of faculty members Elizabeth Bergman, Mary Brennan, Nancy Ekelman, Anne Fiordiomondo, Anty Lam and Stanley Steinerman assisted by Dr. Juana Luster, Dr. Reneida Reyes, Dr. Sophia Scantelbury and Ms. Lynette Fronerberger, RDH, four volunteers from the Second District Dental Society, the class of senior dental hygiene students provided dental examinations, prophylaxis, fluoride treatments, toothbrushing instructions and referrals for further professional dental health treatment to youngsters from throughout Brooklyn. The event was planned and coordinated by Professor Anty Lam and Dr. Stanley Steinerman.

In addition, volunteer senior dental hygiene students participated in an oral health event at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum two days later offered by the Second District Dental Society and the New York State Dental Association and coordinated by Professor Anty Lam. Department of Dental Hygiene students and faculty also operate a dental hygiene clinic throughout the academic year. The clinic offers a variety of free or low-cost dental hygiene services and a free sealant application program to City Tech students, faculty, alumni and community residents.
