The Jewish Faculty & Staff Association (JFSA) at New York City College of Technology honored City Tech President Russell K. Hotzler at its annual demonstration Passover Seder held in the College’s Grace Gallery on April 2, 2009. Pictured here with Dr. Hotzler, right, is JFSA President Albert Sherman, senior CLT with the Department of Advertising Design & Graphic Arts. The demonstration was conducted by Rabbi Alan Kay, a retired member of the College’s Department of English and former City Tech Scholar on Campus.
JFSA named President Hotzler an Honorary Lifetime Member in recognition of his unwavering commitment to educational and cultural programs at City Tech. “Through his academic and administrative leadership,” Sherman said in saluting the president, “Dr. Hotzler has actively encouraged a variety of programs that exemplify the strengths of the College and the cultural and ethnic diversity of its students and faculty. This commitment is integral to his educational philosophy and practice.”
Sherman went on to note that President Hotlzer is similarly committed to ensuring that opportunities are provided at City Tech to encourage the highest level of professional and cultural development for both current and future members of the College community. “These educational and cultural programs have contributed greatly,” Sherman added, “to enhancing the visibility and reputation of the College throughout the neighboring community as well as The City University of New York system and larger educational community.”
In acceptance remarks, President Hotzler commended JFSA for its many valuable contributions to City Tech and called particular attention to the extent to which the association reaches out to all members of the City Tech family with “significant educational programs that engage students and faculty in a spectrum of issues important to all. These programs provide opportunities to gain wisdom that is so needed in our society today.”
In recent years, JFSA’s Distinguished Lecture Series has brought to campus New York Times columnist and author Joseph Berger; Ground Zero master planner Daniel Libeskind; novelist, essayist and journalist Pete Hamill; designer, author and artist Edwin Schlossberg; and Buchenwald liberation witness Dr. Leon Bass, among other notable speakers. The series is coordinated by City Tech retiree Dr. James A. Goldman, former acting dean of continuing education and a long-time member of JFSA.
