CUNY Month Free Events at City Tech: Something for Everyone

City Tech is presenting a month-long smorgasbord of special events in celebration of CUNY Month. (Prospective students and their families should note that the College’s Fall Open House is on Sunday, November 16.) All events are free. The Photographs of Carole Harris
Through November 8, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Library photography show with the themes “Children Gazing,” “Hanging Out” and “Passing Worlds.” “There are many ways to ‘hang out’ with friends in public,” says Harris, a City Tech English professor, “and in each case the presence of the photographer reveals something about the relationship of the friends to each other. Their display of intimacy, slightly intruded upon, seems to be impacted by gender -- the photographer’s and their own.” Info: 718.260.5491.

Black Solidarity Day Event with keynote speaker Dr. Horace G. Campbell, professor of African American Studies and Political Science, Syracuse University. Author of Rasta and Resistance: From Marcus Garvey to Walter Rodney, his recent articles include “Obama at the crossroads of a revolution?” and Barack Obama, Fractals and Momentum in Politics.” Panel discussion with City Tech faculty from different academic disciplines. How to Build a Better (Dental) Bridge
Thursday, November 6, 6 to 8 p.m.
Sponsored by City Tech’s Department of Restorative Dentistry, clinician Dean Mersky, DDS, will present on the topic “An Evidence-Based Comparative Approach to Better Crown and Bridge.” He will present a research-based comparative overview of crown and bridge systems to help technicians gain a clearer understanding of materials, their uses and limitations. Joseph Berger Guest Lecture: 'The World in a City'
Tuesday, November 11, 2008, 1 p.m.
Esteemed New York Times reporter will discuss his most recent book, The World in a City: Traveling the Globe through the Neighborhoods of the New New York (Ballantine Books, 2007), a look at “today's polyglot and polychrome, cosmopolitan and culturally rich New York and the lessons it holds for the rest of the U.S. as immigration changes the face of the nation.” Following  the presentation, two accomplished New Yorkers and Holocaust survivors will be honored on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass): Olga Lipschitz, CEO of Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill Health Center, and Brooklyn-based legendary clothier Martin Greenfield, tailor to the stars and U.S. presidents. Veteran’s Day Week Event: Operation Healthy Homefront
Wednesday, November 12, noon to 4 p.m.
Afternoon of health and wellness information and activities are planned for CUNY’s first health fair for veterans and their families. Thirty armed service organizations, City Tech resources and community-based organizations to offer information and assistance attendees need to support their physical and mental health and build successful post-military careers. The Pain of Depression Film and Discussion

Oral Cancer Screening

City Tech’s Department of Dental Hygiene will host a one-day oral cancer screening clinic in collaboration with the Russian American Dental Association (RADA). What You Need to Know About Foreclosures

Free eye-opening seminar examining the advantages and disadvantages of foreclosure, who should buy foreclosures and if and when to consider their purchase, different kinds of properties that are labeled foreclosures, what to expect if purchasing a foreclosed property, and how to handle that purchase to one’s best advantage.
