Dental Hygiene Professor Marilyn Cortell Named AADH Fellow

Dental Hygiene Professor Marilyn Cortell Named AADH Fellow

The American Academy of Dental Hygiene (AADH) announced on September 1, 2008, that City Tech Professor Marilyn Cortell, RDH, MS, FAADH, had been inducted as an AADH Fellow. The AADH is an organization that fosters the continuing pursuit of education and research in the field and provides formal recognition for those who have achieved excellence in the teaching and practice of dental hygiene.

Professor Cortell has served in numerous leadership positions on the local, state and national
levels of various professional associations. She has taught continuing education courses both nationally and internationally, and contributed to raising the level of knowledge and skill in the
dental hygiene field worldwide. She has authored numerous articles in industry publications and had contributed to the development of several dental hygiene textbooks. Throughout her career, she has provided support and mentorship to colleagues industry-wide.

In its September announcement welcoming Professor Cortell as an Academy Fellow, AADH lavished praise on her for the commitment and dedication to the field that she has demonstrated over the years and expressed its conviction that she would continue to serve the dental hygiene industry in an exemplary manner.

“Speaking on behalf of the faculty, staff, students and alumni of the Department of Dental Hygiene,” said Professor Joycelyn Dillon, department chair, “We extend our heartiest congratulations to Professor Cortell on achieving the credential of Fellow Member of the American Academy of Dental Hygiene. In order to achieve this credential, an applicant needs to have advanced the cause of the profession in a significant manner. Professor Cortell has exhibited a passion for her profession that had enabled her to accomplish professional milestones beyond those needed for this fellowship. The department is proud to have her as part of its faculty and salutes her for this and other achievements.”

Professor Cortell is especially proud of her relationship with City Tech’s dental hygiene program. “The pass rates for program graduates on both their demanding Northeast Regional clinical and rigorous National Board written licensing examinations have averaged more than 93 percent for the past 20 years. This speaks so very well to the outstanding quality of both our students and faculty.”

Something else that Professor Cortell is very proud to be a part of is the department’s student/faculty-staffed Dental Hygiene Clinic, which has provided free or low-cost healthcare services to thousands of families and individuals from throughout the five boroughs for many years. She also has been a key player in the department’s “Send a Soldier a Smile” campaign, which provides much-needed dental healthcare products to U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq.
