Fourth Edition of City Tech Writer Now Online

City Tech Provost Bonne August sang the praises of nearly three dozen newly published student authors at a reception on May 7, 2009, hosted by President Russell K. Hotzler. The event marked the publication of the fourth edition of City Tech Writer. In her remarks, Dr. August told the students of the value of excellent writing.
President Hotzler congratulated faculty members who had assigned and inspired the writing selected for this year’s edition of the annual publication, a forum for the best student writing produced in courses across the curriculum. This year 250 pieces were submitted. The issue is online at http://www.citytech.cuny.edu/files/academics/ctw_v4g_2009.pdf.
City Tech Writer is under the direction of English Professor Jane Mushabac, editor-in-chief. In her remarks, Mushabac commended the exuberant crowd for the bold and memorable writing included in the issue and invited the student authors to read aloud short excerpts from their works. A dramatic “sprint” through the issue followed with lively one-minute readings from the 34 pieces included.
The 2009 volume includes three City Tech Scholar award-winning research essays, “Restrictions on the Free Speech Rights of Inmates” (Law and Paralegal Studies), “Really Cool: We Go to School” on prison education programs (English), and, from Hospitality Management, “Bedbugs in New York City Hotels.” The issue features a summary of the Nobel Peace Prize- winning Report on Climate Change, literary criticism, and writing from courses in physics, mathematics, mechanical engineering, nursing, restorative dentistry and speech. Essays in Volume 4 speak of Andrew Carnegie and Jacob Riis, racism and anti-Semitism, Plato and Descartes, thermodynamic miracles and the growl of a motorcycle.
Also recognized at the reception were student Jessica Hernandez, who designed the winning cover, and her Advertising Design & Graphic Arts Professor Mary Ann Biehl. Professors Biehl and Nasser McMayo both took on the challenge of having City Tech Writer as a client in their advanced classes, yielding 50 prospective cover designs for the volume. Also recognized were Graphic Arts Program Director Lloyd Carr, the publication’s art director, who coordinates the production of the cover – with students formatting and printing the cover design – and Graphic Arts Professor Steve Caputo, who played a key role in these processes.
Faculty, staff and others acknowledged for their assistance in the production of the publication included Special Assistant to the President for Institutional Advancement Stephen M. Soiffer, Executive Assistant to the President Marilyn Morrison, English Department Chair Richard Patterson, Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences Pamela Brown, Image & Visual Communications Senior Designer Alberto Vargas and English Department Office Assistants Lily Lam and Laura Kodet.
Mushabac asked the gathering to welcome English Professor Johannah Rodgers, who will be the 2009-2010 editor-in-chief while Mushabac is on fellowship leave for the year. Rodgers has degrees from Stanford University, City College and the CUNY Graduate Center. She has published a book and many short stories, and has been an assistant editor of two journals.
