New York City College of Technology (City Tech) will honor Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, 1199SEIU President George Gresham and Independence Community Foundation (ICF) at its 2008 Best of New York Award Dinner at the Hilton New York on May 19. Accepting on behalf of ICF will be President Alan Fishman and Executive Director Marilyn Gelber. City Tech graduate Michael Lomonaco ’84, executive chef/managing partner of Porter House New York, who will serve as Dinner Chair and Master of Ceremonies, will be presented the 2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

The evening will begin with a 6 p.m. Guest of Honor Reception, followed by dinner and the awards ceremony at 7 p.m. Some 300 business, industry, community and union leaders, public officials, City Tech alumni, students, faculty and other guests are expected to attend. Derrick D. Cephas, president and CEO of Amalgamated Bank, and James W. Crystal, chairman of Frank Crystal & Co., Inc., will serve as Honorary Dinner Chairs. Both are former Best of New York Award honorees.

The theme of this year’s dinner is “The Power of Partnerships,” and the College will pay special tribute to the thousands of businesses, labor unions, community organizations and private foundations with which it has partnered since its establishment in 1946. The largest public college of technology in the Northeast, City Tech has long enjoyed highly productive relationships with 1199SEIU, Independence Community Foundation and Brooklyn Borough Hall in meeting its mission to provide educational access and opportunity to all New Yorkers. It has produced 80,000 graduates, most of which have remained in the New York metropolitan area and continue to contribute to its economic, cultural and technological vitality.

Established in 1982, the Best of New York Award Dinner is hosted by the New York City College of Technology Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1981 to raise funds for the College. Proceeds from the annual dinner help fund foundation-sponsored scholarships and other student financial assistance and professional development programs.
