Dominic Carter will give the keynote address at "The African American Family: Evolution, Trends and New Developments," marking Black Solidarity Day at City Tech on Monday, November 5, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Atrium Amphitheater.

Carter, who hosts NY1 News' nightly political show, "Inside City Hall," is the author of a new memoir, No Momma's Boy: How I Let Go of My Past and Embraced the Future, in which he chronicles his triumphant struggle to overcome his mother's mental illness while growing up in a Bronx housing project. He is scheduled to speak at 11 a.m.

The first in his family to graduate from college (State University of New York at Cortland), Carter is the recipient of a Samuel P. Peabody Award from the Citizens Committee for Children of New York for vision, innovation and dedication to children and families. He lives in a suburb of New York City with his wife and two children.

After Mr. Carter's speech, there will be a panel discussion on the African American family moderated by Professor Karl Botchway of City Tech's African American Studies Department. Panelists include City Tech Professors Justine Pawlukewicz (Human Services), Martin Garfinkle (Human Services), Reginald Blake (Physics and coordinator of the City Tech Black Male Initiative) and Simboonath Singh (Social Science), and Ms. Faith Fogelman (director of the Office of Student Support Services).

The event is sponsored by City Tech's Departments of African American Studies and Human Services, the Coalition of Black Faculty & Staff, and the Black Women's Networking Committee.
