Orientation Days Draw Record Number of Freshmen
It was "Back to the Beach" for the largest number of City Tech incoming freshmen in 20 years, as they participated in a two-day orientation at the end of August. For the first time ever, the College ran two separate orientations to comfortably accommodate the 1,500 students (out of a total of 3,000 new students) and their 500 parents and other relatives,
The first day attracted students from the School of Technology & Design, and the full day of activities was repeated the following day for students of the Schools of Professional Studies and Arts & Sciences.
The students spent the morning in Klitgord Auditorium being greeted by President Hotzler, Provost August and Vice President Armoza, followed by presentations by administrators from admissions, financial aid, counseling, coaching & mentoring.
From there, the freshmen went off to meet with their academic departments and take campus tours led by student peer orientation guides. At the same time, their parents and other relatives had the opportunity to engage in an open dialogue with the president and his administration.
The end of the day found the students and their relatives back together in the gymnasium, which had been converted into a Caribbean isle -- complete with beach balls, inflated palm trees and other tropical touches, including a live band playing reggae and other theme-appropriate music. Several students went home with prizes, including an academic planner, a student handbook and a 512K USB drive.
Special thanks to the days' emcee, Joe Lento, executive director of student affairs, and to the Office of Student Life and Development's Daniel Fictum (director) and Alice Tucker (assistant to the director) for all their hard work, and to all the other administrators who helped make the days such a success!
